In this chapter we get to know about the Author's tragic story about how his house burnt down to the ground and how he felt after the tragedy, how his mother's mental state was affected and how his cat escaped the burning house. Now we'll discuss the NCERT Solutions to Ch-8 A House is not a Home:


Question 1: What does the author notice one Sunday afternoon? What is his mother’s reaction? What does she do?

Answer: One Sunday afternoon the author notices that the ceiling of his house has caught fire, soon the whole house burnt completely. His mother becomes very sad, anxious and desperate in her desperation she runs into her burning house to bring a box of important documents and the pictures of her dead husband.

Question 2: Why does he break down in tears after the fire?

Answer: The Author breaks down in tears after the fire accident, he was suffering with a great sense of lose. He was missing his pet Cat deeply.

Question 3: Why is the author deeply embarrassed the next day in school? Which words show his fear and insecurity?

Answer: The Author feels deeply embarrassed the next day in school because he has no proper uniform and shoes of his school and his backpack is also missing so, he has no books, homework and a lot of things moreover, according to him he is looking weird in his church dress.

Question 4: The cat and the author are very fond of each other. How has this been shown in the story? Where was the cat after the fire? Who brings it back and how?

Answer: The Author and his pet cat enjoy a deep mutual bond of love with each other. When the author finds his cat nowhere after his house catches fire, he feels  sad and leaves no stone untouched to find her. The cat ran away from the burning house, she was found about a mile away by a woman. She hands over the cat to the Author after finding her.

Question 5: What actions of the schoolmates change the author’s understanding of life and people, and comfort him emotionally? How does his loneliness vanish and how does he start participating in life?

Answer: The Author feels sad, disappointed and a great sense of lose and makes him feel down but when the classmate of his new school came to know about this, they decided to help the author by providing him moral and emotional support. They also provide him many things of daily  use to help him recover his losses. His loneliness vanishes after the helpful behavior of his schoolmates who initiated to be friends with him.

Question 6: What is the meaning of “My cat was back and so was I”? Had the author gone anywhere? Why does he say that he is also back?  

Answer: The author had gone nowhere, he becomes sad and disappointed because he had lost his cat as a result of the fire outbreak in his house. After meeting his cat again his happiness and energetic behavior comes back, that's why he says so.
