 Key Points of Geography Chapter 2 Physical Features of India







1. This Chapter is about the Physical Features of India.

2. This part is only about the Mountainous Region of India. 

3. These Mountain Ranges run from west-east.

4. The Himalayas covers a distance of about 2,400 KM.

5. The Himalayas consists of three parallel ranges:  a) Greater Himalayas

                                                                                        b) Lesser Himalayas 

                                                                                        c) Shivalik Hills

6. Greater Himalayas or The Himadri is the loftiest peak with an avereage height of 6,000 metres

7. Lesser Himalayas or Himachal is the 2nd range amongst the three ranges of the Himalayas this range is mainly composed of altered rocks , the altitude of this range is 3,700 to 4,500 metres    .

8. The outer-most ranges of The Himalayas is known as The Shivaliks have an altitude varying between 900 to 1100 metres these ranges are comprised of unconsolidated sediments brought down by rivers from the main Himalayan ranges.

9. The valley lying between the lesser Himalayas and shivaliks are know as The Duns.

10. Dehra Dun, Kotli Dun and Patli Duns are some of the well known Duns.

11. The Himalayas have been divided on the basis of regions like the parts of Himalayas lying between Indus and Satluj has beend traditionally known as Punjab Himalayas.

12. The Himalayas lying between Satluj and Kali rivers is known as Kumaon Himalayas.

13. The Himalayan region between Kali and Testa Rivers is known as Nepal Himalayas, and Teesta and Dihang Rivers is known as Assam Himalayas. 

This was the key points of the Mountainous Region of India.
